About Acne

acne before and after treatment ONLINE ACNE TREATMENT CONSULT corona aesthetician

Acne is a skin condition that makes people embarrassed and ashamed, which is so sad, because it is not anyone’s fault.  It’s not because you eat too much sugar or chocolate, or french fries.  It’ not because you don’t wash your face, or take a shower, or wash your hair.  And yet, somehow, we still blame ourselves, or feel like others do.

In reality, acne occurs when your hair follicles and pores become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This can cause whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.  Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages, including adults.

Worse yet, acne can be persistent. The pimples and bumps heal slowly, and when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up.  And they can be sore to the touch.

Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and eventually even scar your skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of long-term scarring.

Acne Symptoms:

It seems to be obvious when we have acne.   However, acne signs and symptoms vary depending on the severity of your condition:

  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)

  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)

  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)

  • Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips

  • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)

We Are Specialists In Severe Acne Treatment

Severe acne (sometimes called cystic acne or nodular acne) is the most serious form of acne vulgaris  With severe acne, lesions are inflamed, often painful, and can happen on both the face and the body.

Worse yet, although severe acne can be tough to treat, it's particularly important to start treatment rapidly because severe forms of acne can often cause permanent scarring.   We at Skin Theory Aesthetics™ have the expertise and knowledge to prescribe the best treatments for severe acne, but also can help your skin heal after your acne is under control, returning it to a healthy smooth texture.

Symptoms Of Severe Acne

What sets severe acne apart from milder forms is the amount of redness and inflammation. You'll have lots of papulespustules, and comedones, but you'll also have nodules, cysts, or both.  Blemishes often feel like they are in deeper layers of the skin, and they can be really painful.

Severe acne can happen at any age and in both men and women, and besides the face, breakouts can happen on your back, neck, chest, and shoulders.  With severe acne, over-the-counter (OTC) treatments do nothing to improve your skin.

Sometimes it's hard to determine where your acne falls on the severity scale; that's OK.  If you've tried store-bought or online non-prescription acne treatments for 12 weeks with little or no improvement, it's time to see a professional, regardless of how severe your acne is.

Because severe acne easily leads to scarring, it's critical that you get treatment right away

Treatment Of Severe Acne

Severe acne should be treated aggressively, often with multiple medications, to get it under control.

There are many treatment options that can help improve even severe acne, but it's probably not going to be a quick or easy matter.  Do not expect an overnight “cure.”

It takes time and following a prescribed treatment regimen exactly to get your acne under control.  But don’t lose hope, it will happen!

There are 2 main medications we most often prescribe for severe acne treatment:

  • Doryx® MPC (doxycycline hyclate delayed-release tablets)

  • Fabior® (tazarotene) Foam

Doryx® is one of the strongest oral antibiotics available for acne treatment.  The advantage of Doryx® is that not only is it effective in treating severe acne, but unlike almost all other oral antibiotics, it does not cause stomach upset, making it very easy to tolerate and stick to the proper dosage.

Fabior®, on other hand, is a topical foam, and a compound  similar  to Vitamin A.  It not only helps unclog pores, but it also helps the skin to renew itself more quickly and may improve the appearance and texture of skin.

Severe acne can cause damage to both the skin and your self esteem and confidence. This type of acne often causes scarring, even with careful treatment.

Once your acne is fairly under control, we can help you devise a treatment plan to improve scarring.  So step 1 is getting your acne under control, and then step 2 is repairing skin damage.

Adult Acne

When someone mentions acne, our first natural thought is of a teen-ager.  However, as many as 50 percent of women suffer from acne at some point in their adult lives.  Fewer adult men have a problem, but adult acne in men can be an issue as well.

In teens, acne is usually on the forehead and cheeks, while in adults, acne is usually on the lower face, like the chin or jawline, although it can also commonly occur on the chest and back.

Leading causes of adult acne include stress, lack of sleep, and hormone fluctuation (around your period, during pregnancy, menopause, starting/getting off of birth control, age-related dip in testosterone levels, etc).  This is no surprise since stress, lack of sleep and hormone fluctuation wreck havoc with us in other ways too, including weakening our immune systems, and causing mood changes and increased likelihood of weight gain.

Unlike teenage acne, adult acne is harder to treat because it tends to be deeper, more painful and more cyclical.  On top of that, due to aging, your skin cells don't regenerate as quickly so it takes longer for adult acne to heal.  Further, your skin is different as an adult.  It probably is not as resilient as when you were younger, so products that might have worked well on you as a teen are not right for your skin now.

Teen-geared products are usually too strong for adult skin and can be irritating and drying, causing your skin to overproduce oil, which leads to more acne.  Oh no!

Using an acne treatment regimen specifically designed for adult acne can effectively clear acne while keeping your skin healthy and balanced.
