All About the Spectra Laser Peel
What is the Spectra Laser Peel?
This skin rejuvenation peel has long been a go-to treatment for many celebrities whenever they need to look especially glowy and youthful for Hollywood events. It’s no wonder it is more popularly known as the Hollywood Laser Peel.
It’s a preferred method because it gently exfoliates and resurfaces your skin. It can erase skin imperfections including dark spots, freckles, fine lines, and acne scars.
The Spectra Laser Peel is safe to use for most skin types and is FDA-approved.
How does the Spectra Laser Peel Work?
Spectra is a skin rejuvenation peel that uses a series of laser wavelengths and pulses to improve the quality of your skin. It is also carbon-assisted, meaning it uses a thin layer of Carbon Spectra lotion to help the laser achieve its results.
A treatment consists of two stages using different modes of the laser:
Skin Cell Regeneration: Also called the Spectra Mode, the laser works to stimulate cell regeneration and production of collagen as well as reduce any inflammation you are experiencing.
During this stage of the treatment, the dermis, or the skin layer below the topmost layer of the skin, is targeted.
Light Ablation or Exfoliation: At this point in the treatment, the laser is used in Q-Switched mode. In this mode, the laser targets the carbon contained in the Spectra lotion.
This helps exfoliate the old skin cells from the topmost layer of the skin, or the epidermis.
It is in this mode that the melanin (pigment) that causes age spots or freckles is broken up. The body eventually passes this synthesized pigment safely out through the natural process of elimination.
During a treatment, multiple laser passes are made. However, unlike other laser treatments, Spectra uses gentle light with no harsh effects on the skin. A treatment typically lasts less than an hour and you can go back to your usual routine after your Spectra appointment.
What Skin Issues Can the Spectra Skin Rejuvenation Peel Address?
The Spectra Laser Peel addresses a number of skin imperfections including:
Dark spots - freckles, liver spots, or age spots
Fine lines and other skin texture irregularities
Overproduction of sebum which can cause oily skin
Unwanted tattoos (limited to black, blue, brown, red, tan, purple, or orange inks)
What are the Benefits of the Spectra Laser Peel?
As a skin rejuvenation peel, Spectra offers a range of benefits without the inconvenience that accompany a lot of other treatments available.
It is quick and gentle
There is no downtime after the treatment unlike other similar skin resurfacing treatments, including CO2 lasers or chemical peels
It improves skin tone
It gives you younger-looking skin by erasing fine lines, improving appearance of spots or pigmentations, addressing acne and acne scars, and shrinking large pores
It can be used in combination with other treatments including IPL, RF, and microdermabrasion

What Happens During a Spectra Laser Peel Treatment?
As we’ve been mentioning, the Spectra Laser Peel treatment is quick and convenient. When you want a pick-me-upper in terms of how your skin looks, this skin rejuvenation peel is perfect.
You can schedule an appointment with your esthetician, come in for your treatment, and step out ready and beautiful for a special event or even for just that night out with your significant other.
When you come for your appointment, the first step is thorough skin cleansing. Your specialist may or may not apply a topical anesthetic depending on how sensitive you are to pain. If a topical anesthetic is applied, it takes roughly 20 minutes for it to take effect.
A thin layer of the specially formulated SpectraLotion™ is applied thinly and evenly on your face. It will look like a mud pack. It contains carbon particles that can penetrate acne scars as well as the pores of the skin on the face.
The laser then works to penetrate the dermis to encourage cell regeneration and collagen production. In subsequent passes, the laser then targets the carbon in the SpectraLotion mask which helps exfoliate the skin and erase imperfections including freckles, liver spots, melasma, and acne.
For specially pigmented areas and tattoos, the laser is focused on more. This helps break down the pigmentation.
As the laser is passed over your skin, you may feel your skin warm up and have tingling sensations. Don’t be alarmed if you also hear snapping sounds as the laser is passed over your skin. This is part of the normal process.
To help keep your skin cool during the treatment, your specialist may spray a saline solution from time to time between passes of the laser. A treatment session typically lasts less than an hour.
You can expect dramatic results with just one treatment and you will be perfectly happy with how you look with this one-time session. You can also schedule one to three treatments spaced out two weeks between treatments repeated two to three times a year to achieve maximum benefits from the treatment.
Makeup can be applied in just a matter of a few hours after the treatment so you can really put the glam on if you plan to go out the same night of your appointment.
What are the Side Effects?
You may observe a slight reddening of the skin after the treatment. This is an expected side effect which usually resolves itself within a few hours.
In some instances, patients report some itching, flaking, and rashes. Some people experience bruising, scabbing, or temporary hypo or hyperpigmentation. These rare symptoms also go away within a few days.
While this treatment is very safe, there is still some risk of infection. It’s important to do your research and choose a licensed provider who has training and experience in performing Spectra Laser treatments to avoid unwanted results.
Are There Any After-Treatment Precautions?
There is moderate after-treatment care that we recommend for patients who have just undergone Spectra Laser Peel:
Avoid direct sunlight for up 24 hours after treatment
Use sun protection with SPF50 or greater
Avoid hot water, swimming, or hot tubs
Wash face with a gentle oil free cleanser 2 to 3 times a day
Avoid facial scrubs, Retin-A, corticosteroids, glycolic or azelaic acid, hydroquinone, and oral acne medications
