There are many ways to minimize the appearance of lines and soften wrinkles. Skin Theory Aesthetics™ offers the best cosmetic treatments that can make you look younger and rejuvenate your skin.
Skin Theory Aesthetics™ offers FDA approved neurotoxin treatments XEOMIN® AND BOTOX®, as well as wrinkle filler treatments that effectively soften wrinkles and minimize lines on the face. .
Neurotoxins are injectables that work by calming muscle contractions that cause wrinkles. Wrinkle fillers or dermal fillers, are likewise injectables that add volume, soften wrinkles or improve contours on the face.
Skin Theory Aesthetics™ has years of expertise and experience to offer men and women the best cosmetic procedures to help you look your absolute best, regardless of your age, young or “old”.
Not All Wrinkles Are the Same
lthough you may want to deny it, you know you’ve really aged when wrinkles start to appear. Some people accept wrinkles as part of the aging process, but some may want to keep these at bay for as long as they can. If you are of the latter group, there’s no judgements here. There are treatments available that can soften wrinkles and rejuvenate your skin.
Not all wrinkles are the same, however. The kind you want to address will determine what treatment method is appropriate.
Dynamic wrinkles are those that form through repetitive facial movements including squinting which cause crow’s feet, smiling which cause smile lines and furrowing of the brow that may cause those horizontal lines on the forehead as well as those elevens between your brows.
When you are young, skin is elastic and can spring back to its original position even when making facial gestures that result in dynamic wrinkles. However, over the years, skin loses elasticity and these wrinkles stay on the skin and result in static wrinkles.
Static wrinkles are also the result of loss of fat and collagen and the effect of gravity on your skin.
Neurotoxins or Wrinkle Fillers - Which do You Need?
Suitable Treatment for Dynamic Wrinkles
Neurotoxins available as XEOMIN® AND BOTOX® are derived from a powerful toxin called botulinum. This toxin is produced by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. These FDA approved neurotoxins work by essentially “paralyzing” muscles so they can no longer move to create wrinkles or lines. If wrinkles are caused by repetitive facial movements such as squinting or frowning, your therapist will likely recommend a neurotoxin injection.
Neurotoxins are appropriate for addressing and recommended for:
✓ Clients with wrinkles around the eyes caused by squinting
✓ Clients with horizontal lines on the forehead
✓ Clients with glabellar lines or “elevens” caused by frowning
✓ Clients who may even out an asymmetry in the face or eyebrows which can be addressed by relaxing certain muscles on one side of the face
Suitable Treatment for Static Wrinkles
Wrinkle or dermal fillers help soften and smooth out wrinkles that are unaffected by facial expressions or those that cannot be addressed by relaxing affected muscles. Wrinkle fillers are gel-like injectables that are administered under the skin to plump it up and change its appearance.
There are several FDA approved fillers:
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) - Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero Balance
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) - Radiesse®.
Poly-L-lactic Acid - Sculptra® Aesthetic
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) - Bellafill® (formerly known as Artefill)
To summarize, wrinkle or dermal fillers are appropriate for:
✓ Clients with deep lines around the eyes, brows or mouth
✓ Clients with wrinkles caused by loss of elasticity
✓ Clients who would like to lift or change the contours of their face or lips
Often, neurotoxins and wrinkle fillers are used in combination to bring about best results. Our specialists at Skin Theory Aesthetics™ carefully assess your needs and design treatment that best addresses your needs.
Soften Wrinkles - What to Expect with Treatments
BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are injectables that are non-invasive, safe and for most people, painless. Expect to feel some sting or prick on affected areas, especially for those needing multiple shots. Your therapist may apply a topical anesthesia to help with the discomfort should you need it.
BOTOX® and XEOMIN® treatments can take as little as 10 minutes to 30 minutes and are performed just in the clinic. It is normal to experience little to no movement in the areas where the neurotoxin was administered. Do not be alarmed. This is just the neurotoxin calming nerve impulses that cause muscles to contract. Some people experience this up to 90 days after the treatment.
The full effect of the treatment can be seen in three to five days.
Neurotoxin treatments require no downtime. However, people are advised to take certain precautions after the treatment:
Avoid lying down within the next 6 hours after treatment
Avoid exercising till the next day after treatment
Do not take Ibuprofen or any blood thinning medications
Avoid bending the head forward for the next 2 hours after treatment
How long do treatment effects last?
Effects of neurotoxin treatments are short lived. Treatments may have to be done two to three times a year for best results. However, results become more long lasting with regular treatment.
We recommend starting neurotoxin treatments as early as in your late 20’s or early 30’s. They prevent wrinkles from forming before they become a problem.
Should I be concerned about side effects?
Mild paralysis is an expected side effect in the affected area. Frowning may not be possible after the treatment. But all other facial expressions are still possible, if this is a concern.
Other after effects are bruising and some mild soreness in the treatment area.
There are rare occassions of people reporting these side effects:
Paralysis in nearby muscles
Temporary drooping eyelids
For the most part, wrinkle or derma filler treatments are minimally non-invasive. Treatment sessions are fast and relatively easy. Unlike neurotoxins where full effects can only be seen a few days after treatment, you can see immediate results right after treatment.
How long do the effects of the treatment last?
Wrinkle fillers have more long lasting effects compared to neurotoxins. Some filler injectables may last from 6 months to up to 2 or more years.
What are the usual side effects?
The short term side effects are mild redness, some swelling or bruising, feeling of tenderness or itching on the treatment area.
Some people experience allergic reactions. Some develop tiny bumps under the skin. This is especially a risk for fillers that have longer lasting effects. Unfortunately for some cases, the bumps become permanent and can only be removed through surgery.
In some cases, some clients experience Tyndall effect, a bluish skin discoloration on the affected area. For the most part, this can fade away after several months but treatments are available if it does not readily go away.
