All About Neurotoxin Medications

How can a substance that’s a toxin be medication? It’s almost an oxymoron. However, this is a case where something potentially dangerous is put to good use. Here, we give you information to help you decide if treatment using XEOMIN® or BOTOX®, both neurotoxin medications, is for you.

What are neurotoxin medications?

There are different kinds of neurotoxins. These are described to be toxins that are destructive to the nerve tissue. However, it is their ability to target specific nerves or tissues that make them useful when used in medications.

Such is the case for neurotoxin medications XEOMIN® and BOTOX®. Both are derived from a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This organism produces botulinum which causes muscle paralysis normally associated with a severe form of food poisoning.

Used in its purified and diluted form, botulinum causes controlled muscle relaxation. Through countless studies, scientists were able to harness the toxin’s ability to calm nerve impulses that cause muscles to contract.

Initially, they were FDA approved for therapeutic uses in the late 1980’s for:

  • Lazy eyes

  • Uncontrolled blinking

  • Excessive drooling

  • Excessive sweating

  • Chronic migraine

  • Incontinence

  • Cervical dystonia - a neural condition where neck muscles contract involuntarily and causes the head to twist into an uncomfortable position.

However, in the 2000’s, neurotoxin medications were also FDA approved for cosmetic uses.  XEOMIN® and BOTOX®, brand names for the purified botulinum toxin, are interchangeably used to calm muscles that cause wrinkles and creases. The common areas where these are used are:

  • The horizontal creases that form on the forehead

  • The crows feet that appear around the eyes

  • The smile lines at the corners of the mouth

  • The double lines, also called “elevens” or glabellar lines between the eyes

What are the main differences between XEOMIN® and BOTOX®? Not much in terms of usage. It all comes down to formulation. XEOMIN® is pure botulinum toxin A while BOTOX® has protective protein clustered around the active ingredient.

Some people may develop resistance to the protein in BOTOX® over time if this was what they were initially being treated with. In such cases, a switch to XEOMIN® may be an alternative treatment.

Some people opt for XEOMIN® because it is the cheaper choice while giving the same end results.

What do I need to do before a treatment with neurotoxin medications?

To ensure your absolute safety, it is important to be as transparent to your specialist about your medical history as possible. This will allow him/her to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment. Disclose to your specialist:

  • Any medication, supplements or herbal concoctions you are taking

  • Any allergies you may have

  • Any medical condition, illness or disease you have

  • Medical procedures you have undergone recently including Botox treatments, surgery, etc

  • If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive

A week prior to the treatment, your specialist will ask you to refrain from taking any blood thinning medications including:

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve or Motrin)

  • Aspirin

  • Exedrin

  • Vitamin E

  • St. John’s Wort

  • Ginko Biloba

  • Ginseng

  • Fish Oil or Omega-3’s

What to expect with a treatment with neurotoxin medications?

XEOMIN® and BOTOX® are both FDA approved. If safety is a concern, we can confidently say that these treatments are safe and non-invasive.

Since these two neurotoxin medications are injectables, some may be concerned about the pain. Especially for multiple injections, there may be a sting (some describe it as a bit more uncomfortable than a mosquito bite).

For some patients, a topical anesthesia may be used should it become necessary.

Treatments using neurotoxin medications can take as little as 10 minutes. Once the substance is injected, you may experience less to no movement within the affected muscles. This is because nerve impulses of the muscles are lessened and subsequently, activity within the area is reduced. Some patients may experience this up to 90 days after the treatment.

For people who chose BOTOX®, it takes 24 to 72 hours for the treatment to take full effect. Fine lines and wrinkles become softer and eventually fade away within three to five days after administration of the drug.

It takes 4 days after treatment for XEOMIN® to take full effect - slightly a bit longer than BOTOX®.

Is there a downtime after treatment?

XEOMIN® or BOTOX® treatments are non-invasive and require little or no down time.

Treatment patients do need to take these precautions:

  • Do not lie down within the next 6 hours after treatment

  • Exercise should be avoided till the next day after the treatment

  • Do not take Ibuprofen or blood thinning medicines

  • Do not bend the head forward for the next 2 hours after the treatment

  • Do not rub or scratch the injected area

  • Do not apply heat treatment to the skin

Do the effects of neurotoxin medications last?

Treatment effects are short lived. After a period of time, effects do wear off and nerve impulses become more active. This results in more muscle contractions that lead to lines and wrinkles. Typically, treatments should be repeated two to three times a year for best results.

Regular treatments do result in progressively long lasting effects. Patients may find that they may not need more frequent touch ups or may not need as much injections with regular maintenance.

Are there side effects?

Many people are reluctant to try neurotoxin medications because of their undeserved reputation for giving patients “frozen” or “expressionless” faces after treatment. While it is true that you may not be able to frown right after treatment, all other facial expressions are not affected. It’s therefore really important to go to a reputable and experienced specialist to administer the treatment to avoid any unpleasant after effects.

Some side effects that people experience after the treatment are:

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Headache

  • Neck pain

  • Dry eyes

  • Dry mouth

  • Tiredness

  • Swelling of eyelid or bruising

  • Diarrhea

  • Blinking less than usual

  • Bleeding and bruising at the site injection

Watch out for signs of allergic reactions, especially with XEOMIN® as this can happen. Itching, swelling or shortness of breath can turn into a medical emergency if ignored.
