Laser Hair Removal FAQs
Laser Hair Removal FAQs
Body hair is nothing to be ashamed of. If going au naturel when it comes to grooming is what works for you, then no one can say otherwise. Having said that, it’s not for everyone. For people who choose to keep body hair off, shaving or waxing is the usual course of action.
But let’s be real - grooming can be tedious and time consuming! Shaving can result in ingrown hair, nicks, and little red bumps on the skin. Waxing can be wonderful, but hair starts creeping back just after a few days. And if you have it done at a salon regularly, it can get pretty expensive, month after month, year after year.
If you’re tired of the routine of razors and waxes, perhaps you’ve already considered the more permanent solution of laser hair removal. If you want more information about it before taking the plunge, here’s our primer on laser hair removal:
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Question: How Does Laser Hair Removal Work
Answer: Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light targeted at the melanin (pigment) in the hair. It uses heat to destroy the hair follicle resulting in delay in future hair growth. When done correctly, it should only affect the hair and not the skin around it.
During a session, a cool gel is applied to the treatment area. The laser instrument is passed over the skin and it pulses and releases beams of light that target the dark pigment in the hair follicles. You may feel a mild snapping sensation during the pulses.
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - Is It Painful?
Question: Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt
Answer: While it’s not entirely painless, you can expect the pain to be less than when waxing but a bit more painful than shaving.
Some people describe the sensation like that of having tiny rubber bands hitting the skin. The area where you have it done, as well as how thick and dense the hair is, will affect the level of pain you may feel. Typically, having the bikini area, underarms, lower legs, and the upper lip done may be more painful than other areas.
Some lasers have cold air or cold spray that helps with the discomfort. The cooling gel used on the area also helps.
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - Are There Areas Where Laser Hair Removal Does Not Work?
Question: Are There Areas Where Laser Hair Removal Does Not Work
Answer: No. You can have it done anywhere, even for facial hair removal. The important thing to note is it works best on dark hair. So, it’s not as effective on gray or blonde hair.
We highly recommend asking your hair removal aesthetician prior to scheduling an appointment if your hair is right for laser hair removal.
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - How Do You Prepare for a Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
Question: How Do You Prepare For A Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Answer: If you want to achieve the best results, there are certain steps you need to take for safety and maximum effectiveness of the treatment.
✔️ Avoid sun exposure. Remember that the laser works by targeting the dark pigment of the hair or skin. If you’ve had sun exposure within 2 weeks of your appointment and you are sunburned or even just tanned, it’s best to reschedule. This applies for a fake tan, as well. It’s better to schedule your appointment when your skin is at its palest possible.
✔️ Shave with a new razor but don’t pluck, wax, or use hair removal products. Do this 24 hours prior to your appointment. Shaving will result in less pain for you, especially for the more sensitive parts.
Plucking, waxing, or using hair removal products will render the treatment ineffective because you’re essentially removing the hair follicles which the laser targets.
✔️ Take off ALL your makeup before a treatment session. This step applies only if you’re having your face done, of course. Why do you need to remove your makeup? It’s for your own safety. The laser will burn any area with pigment and product on. Worst case. you may have to deal with pigment changes for months after the treatment.
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - How Long Does the Treatment Take?
Question: How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Treatment Take
Answer: How long the treatment lasts and how many treatments are needed will vary from person to person. With laser hair removal treatments, the adage patience is a virtue applies.
Some skin types take much longer to treat. While a typical session might last for just 20 minutes or so, for some it may take an hour or more.
As mentioned above, it takes several sessions before you achieve silky smooth skin. It may take two to three weeks after your first treatment to notice a difference. And it may take between 8 to 12 treatments before you get the full result. Depending on the body part being treated, each treatment session is spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
FAQs about Laser Hair Removal - Is There Downtime after the Treatment?
Question: Is There Downtime After Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Answer: While there is no downtime after the treatment, expect your skin to be swollen. This is called perifollicular edema or swollen hair follicles. Ironically, this means that the treatment was a success.
There will also be some redness, stinging or itching which may last up to 48 hours, but more typically lasts an hour or two after the treatment. A hydrocortisone cream may be prescribed if symptoms last longer to help with the discomfort.
Your aesthetician will also advise you to take certain precautions after the treatment.
❌ Avoid sun exposure or salt water up to 48 hours after your session. In other words, no going to the beach. Use sunscreen if you need to go out.
❌ Avoid the gym, saunas, or hot showers. Your skin is vulnerable, and exposing it to a warm environment can allow bacteria to multiply and give you spots.
❌ Avoid waxing, plucking, or shaving. It’s important to allow your skin to heal after the treatment.
❌ Avoid perfumes, deodorants, and makeup on the treated areas.
❌ Avoid your usual beauty products. At least for 2 days after (and before) a treatment, stop using any scrub, glycolic acid, or retinol creams.
