Hyaluronic acid fillers are one of the most popular treatments for wrinkles and lines. Skin Theory Aesthetics is a leading aesthetic clinic specializing in cosmetic treatments that rejuvenate your skin.

Skin Theory Aesthetics™ proudly offers a variety of volumizing cosmetic fillers to help erase the signs of aging on your face.  As we age, our face loses volume resulting in wrinkles, deep creases and folds, and thinning lips. Filler treatments can add volume, restoring a more youthful appearance.

At Skin Theory, we never use a cookie-cutter approach.  We will always analyze your specific needs, skin type, and lifestyle, and then recommend a customized plan we believe will have the best results for you.

Skin Theory Aesthetics™ has years of expertise and experience to help both men and women look your absolute best, regardless of your age, young or “old”.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers 101

What are hyaluronic acid fillers?

In recent years, hyaluronic acid has created a lot of buzz in the cosmetic world. It has become the equivalent of the “IT” girl in ingredients and you can find it in a lot of products - toners, serum, essences and a whole range of other beauty essentials, including dermal fillers.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide (a form of sugar) that is naturally found in our body. And it plays a vital role in our body, particularly in the skin. It helps our skin retain it’s hydration levels.

As we age, our skin slows down production of hyaluronic acid. By the age of 40 to 50, we would have lost as much as half of the HA in our skin, as compared to when we were in our 20’s. This results in dry skin, loss of volume, and lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can address these issues. As an active ingredient in fillers, hyaluronic acid has the amazing ability to attract water to hydrate the skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers come in injectable gel form and are used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and facial folds. They also add structure and volume to the face and lips.

The effects of a hyaluronic acid filler treatment can be seen immediately. Depending on what type of hyaluronic acid filler you used, the effects can last anywhere from 6 months to up to 24 months.

What issues can hyaluronic acid fillers address?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can address a variety of issues. These include:

✔️ Scars including those caused by acne or wounds

✔️ Cheek depressions

✔️ Nasolabial lines (creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth)

✔️ “Elevens” or frown lines between the eyebrows

✔️ Crow’s feet

✔️ Marionette lines (lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the outer corners of the chin

✔️ Smokers lines (vertical lines that appear around the mouth)

✔️ Worry lines (horizontal lines that run across the forehead)

✔️ Volume loss on the back of the hands

What to expect with a hyaluronic acid filler treatment?

Pre-treatment. To minimize any risk during the treatment, an experienced specialist will have a pre-treatment consultation with you. This is to assess what needs to be done and what type of hyaluronic filler is appropriate for your needs.  It’s also important to disclose any medical conditions you may have or medications you are currently taking so these may be taken into consideration.

Patients who have these conditions cannot undergo HA filler treatment:

✖️ Pregnant or breastfeeding women

✖️ Active facial or oral herpes infection

✖️ Infection in the intended treatment area

✖️ Allergy to any components of injectable hyaluronic acid (including lidocaine)

✖️ Uncontrolled diabetes

✖️ Blood clotting problems

In addition, it’s also not advisable for people who are undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.

During Treatment. The treatment area is thoroughly cleaned to prevent any infection. Your specialist may apply a topical anesthesia to help with any discomfort during the treatment. Some brands of hyaluronic acid fillers already contain lidocaine which also has an anesthetic effect. Just be sure to inform your specialist about any sensitivity to lidocaine to prevent any allergic reaction.

The administration of the filler typically takes only a few moments per site. Depending on the number of areas to be treated, the procedure may last from as little as 15 minutes to as long as an hour.

After the treatment, expect to feel a little discomfort, redness, bruising and tenderness at the site of the injection.

After treatment. There is little or no downtime after an HA filler treatment. The reactions after the treatment usually disappear after injection and should go away in a few days.

Here are things to avoid after a treatment:

  • Make-up during the 12 hours after the injection

  • Extreme temperatures - going to the sauna, extreme cold, etc during the week after the treatment

  • Travelling on a plane within 72 hours after injection

  • Drinking alcohol within 72 hours after injection

  • Extreme sports within 72 hours after injection

  • Dental treatments

  • Sun exposure

Does it hurt?

HA filler treatments are generally not painful. You may experience a certain amount of discomfort, the degree of which depend on the area. The lip and nose area are pretty sensitive so expect more discomfort during treatment in this area.

As already mentioned, some brands of HA fillers contain lidocaine to help manage discomfort. In addition, application of a topical anesthetic cream also helps.

What are the side effects of the treatment?

Typical side effects include:

  • Redness

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Bleeding

  • Lumps and bumps

Less common side effects include:

  • Numbness in the treatment area

  • Allergic reactions

  • Infection

  • Pigmentation (bluish discoloration)

  • Blisters and cysts

  • Scarring

  • Migration of filler material to another site

  • Vascular occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel)

  • Blindness

Is it safe?

An HA filler treatment may be non-invasive but it is still a procedure. We cannot overemphasize the importance of choosing your provider carefully to avoid any of the more serious side effects that can happen after a treatment. A specialist who is trained, experienced and most importantly certified to do the procedure will minimize risks.

A reputable provider also ensures the safety of their patients by using FDA approved hyaluronic acid fillers. Among the more popular brands being used by cosmetic specialists include:

  • Juvederm products - Juvederm XC, Voluma, Volbella, Vollure

  • Restylane products - Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Silk and Restylane Defyne

  • Belotero Balance

How long do the effects of an HA filler treatment last?

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, HA fillers, dermal fillers,Juvederm, soften wrinkles, plump lips

The results from hyaluronic acid filler treatment are not permanent. The effects, as well as the longevity of filler will vary from one patient to another. The location of the injection, the unique properties of the hyaluronic acid filler used, the age of the patient and the characteristic of the patient’s skin all contribute to how long the effects of a treatment last.

Typically, HA filler injected into the lips lasts 6 months. For nasolabial folds, it may last longer - 9 to 12 months. Voluma, a Juvederm product, may last up to 24 months when used to add volume to cheeks.
