What are Botox® Injections?

Another year, another birthday. Thus, is the cycle of life. When you reach a certain age, and lines and wrinkles start to show, you cannot help but wish you can just turn back the clock. You can’t stop time from marching on, but you can certainly do something to stop your face from showing your age.

Botox® injections are a simple way to erase lines and wrinkles in your face. Reveal a younger looking you with this treatment. Still having reservations? Read on to know about what Botox® injections are and how they can change how you look almost immediately.

What is Botox®?

Would it scare you to know that Botox® is actually a toxin, a neurotoxin, in fact that is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria?

This neurotoxin is called botulinum and can be extremely toxic. It is the same toxin that causes botulism, a kind of food poisoning, which causes paralysis. The botulinum toxin disrupts the nerve signalling processes that stimulate muscle contraction.

However, scientists have found a way to harness the very quality that makes the toxin dangerous, and turn it into something that can help certain medical conditions including lazy eye or uncontrolled blinking. When used in a therapeutic context,  Botox® is safe and has a few side effects.

In 2002, Botox® gained approval for cosmetic use. Botox® injections are used as wrinkle relaxers. Here is how they work:

Botox® injections prevent the release of the chemical acetylcholine. This attaches to receptors on the muscle cells that causes them to contract or shorten. Simply put, Botox® injections stop muscle cells from contracting. This allows the muscles to become less stiff.

The very small doses of botulinum toxin calm the fibers of the muscles that cause the skin to look wrinkled or loose.

What are the uses of Botox® injections?

Since the late 1980’s, Botox® has been approved for treatment of the following medical conditions:

  • crossed eyes, or strabismus

  • eyelid spasms, or blepharospasm

  • a neurological movement disorder called cervical dystonia

  • excessive sweating, known as primary focal hyperhidrosis

In the cosmetic industry, Botox® Injections are used to reduce appearance of facial wrinkles. In fact, it is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the US. In 2016, over 7 million people had Botox® Injections.

The most common areas where people use Botox® Injections on include:

  • “Cobblestone” skin on the chin

  • Crow’s feet (the wrinkles around the eyes)

  • Horizontal creases on the forehead

  • Grabella creases between the eyes (also called “elevens”)

  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

  • Along the jawline to counteract bone loss and correct a downturned lip

Who should get Botox® Injections?

Most people can get the treatment. However, it is important to manage expectations. People getting this treatment should not expect to change in looks drastically. The idea is to look the same as you are, only unaffected by the ravages of time.

It is a good way of averting fine wrinkles so most doctors do not recommend it for young people. Botox® injections may be started for people in their late 20’s or early 30’s. It’s important to remember that this is for maintenance, not for drastic changes.

What to expect when getting Botox® Injections?

Most people are concerned about how safe the treatment is. Afterall, it is a neurotoxin that is being injected into your face, right?

Botox® Injections are safe, non-invasive and generally painless. Since needles are necessarily involved in the process, you can expect a slight sting on the areas where the Botox® is administered. Most people do not require it, but if necessary a topical anesthesia may be administered to help with the needle sting pain.

The procedure just takes 10 minutes and there is practically no downtime. Got some minutes to spare during lunch break? You can go ahead and book an appointment and you can go back to work right after.

After a Botox® treatment, do not be alarmed if you experience less to no movement in the affected muscles. This is just the nerve impulses of the muscles being calmed. Some people may experience this up to 90 days after the treatment.

It takes 24 to 72 hours for the treatment to take full effect and you can expect the fine lines and wrinkles to soften and fade away within three to five days after Botox® Injections

How long do effects last after Botox® Injections?

Depending on the treatment, effects may last three to twelve months. Since effects are short lived, we recommend getting the treatment done two to three times a year. Researches indicate that the effects can become long lasting after several treatments.

Those who get Botox® injections on a regular basis can see decreased muscle activity. Subsequently, they may not need as much the next time they have it done or may not need to have touch ups done as frequently.

Do I need to worry about side effects?

We’ve all heard of those stories - of botched jobs and immobile foreheads of one too many reality stars appearing on TV.  The good news is that these are really the exceptions rather than the rule. Truth be told, many have had Botox® injections done with nobody ever noticing it. The important thing to do is to find an experienced specialist who will administer it properly.

The side effect that cannot be helped is slight paralysis in the injected muscle. Because of this, frowning may not be possible (a good thing, in general, if you ask me). However, not to worry, other facial expressions will still be there

As what was already mentioned above Botox® injections are generally safe and painless. However, some people may experience these side effects:

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Headache

  • Upset stomach

  • Mild pain, swelling or bruising around the injection site

  • Eyelid drooping which is temporary

  • Numbness

  • Paralysis in nearby muscles
