What is Botox® Cosmetic Treatment?
Mention Botox® and you’re likely to get different reactions. Some would raise an eyebrow and say “No thanks” without really understanding anything about it. Some may say needles scare them. But if you’ve been seeing lines and wrinkles slowly populating your face, the idea of having this treatment done would be really appealing.
If you’re one of the latter, read on to know how a Botox® cosmetic treatment can change how you look …. for the better.
What exactly is Botox®?
People are often surprised that Botox® is actually the brand name of a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This is the same toxin that causes muscle paralysis called botulism. This condition is usually associated with a certain type of food poisoning.
While paralysis due to botulism is a serious complication, this same effect has been discovered to be advantageous in certain applications. Scientists found that injecting diluted amounts of the toxin into specific muscles can have the beneficial effect of controlled muscle relaxation.
In the late 1980’s FDA approved its usage for ailments such as blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). Cosmetic physicians, however, found that the purified form of the neurotoxin can also be injected to relax the muscles of the face that cause the skin to look wrinkled or loose.
Botox® has also been FDA approved in 2002 to be used for cosmetic treatments to address wrinkles and facial creases including:
Frown lines on the forehead
Crow’s feet or the lines around the eyes
Axillary hyperhidrosis (sweaty armpits) was also found to be helped by injection of Botox®.
What to expect when you get a Botox® cosmetic treatment?
While having your face injected with a toxin may be a scary thought, a Botox® cosmetic treatment is safe, non-invasive and most importantly, generally painless. There may be a slight sting or prick on the areas injected with Botox®.
For some patients, a topical anesthesia may be used should it become necessary.
A Botox® cosmetic treatment only takes 10 minutes to be administered. Once the purified protein called BTX-A or botulinum toxin type A is injected, you may expect less to no movement within the affected muscles. Essentially what happens is the nerve impulses of the muscles are calmed, and the activity within the injected area is reduced. Some patients experience this up to 90 days after treatment.
Expect your fine lines and wrinkles to become softer, eventually fading away within three to five days after the administration of Botox®.
Is there downtime?
As we’ve mentioned already, this is a non-invasive procedure. There is no surgery involved so there is no downtime. You can even have it done during your lunch break and go about your usual routine after the procedure.
However, you are advised to take several precautions:
Avoid lying down within the next 6 hours after treatment
Avoid exercising till the next day after treatment
Do not take Ibuprofen or any blood thinning medications
Avoid bending the head forward for the next 2 hours after treatment
How long does the effect last?
A Botox® cosmetic treatment’s effects are short lived. We recommend having the procedure done two to three times a year for best results. According to research, the effects of having Botox® done can be long lasting after several treatments.
Are there side effects?
Botox® is safe and effective. If administered by an experienced specialist, it gives you an non-invasive alternative to cosmetic surgeries.
Many people are reluctant to try this treatment after hearing horror stories of some going “frozen” or “expressionless” after the procedure. However, these unpleasant side effects can only happen if you go to a less than qualified specialist. The good news is that these can often be remedied.
One expected side effect is slight muscle paralysis in the injected muscle. You may not be able to frown after the treatment. But all other facial expressions will still be there, if this is your worry.
Because there are needles involved, you may also experience bruising on the injected area. Expect some mild soreness, as well. Numbness in the affected muscles will also set in. However, all these side effects will disappear within a few hours after the treatment.
Here’s more good news - because the procedure is temporary, any side effect you may experience is reversible.
If you think about it, these are minor side effects in exchange for having a face that looks younger and fresh looking. Pretty amazing, right?
What problems does a Botox® Cosmetic Treatment fix?
Over time, our face loses its suppleness and develops lines and creases that make us look tired and well, old. It does not have to remain that way. You can reverse the signs of ageing with Botox® .
Here is what a Botox® cosmetic treatment can do for you:
Relax muscles that produce expression lines including wrinkles, frown lines and fine lines. These are caused by repetitive or continuous muscle contraction.
Treat lines that form around the eyes including crow’s feet. Glabellar lines or those wrinkles that form between the eyes and the forehead can also be erased with the treatment.
While this treatment is mostly used to address skin issues, it goes beyond these. Botox® can effectively treat headaches or debilitating migraines, as well as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) by relaxing overactive muscles.
While this treatment can address above issues, it has its limitations. Keep in mind that if you’re looking to treat sagging skin, this is not the procedure for it.
