What is Botox?

Botox® is actually a brand name for an injectable treatment that is a purified neurotoxin that comes from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria.

The neurotoxin, called Botulinum Toxin A, is the same toxin that causes botulism, a kind of food poisoning. It has the ability to disrupt the nerve signalling processes that stimulate muscle contraction.

In its purified and diluted state, it has been found effective in addressing medical conditions including lazy eye and uncontrolled blinking.

In 2002, it was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use to address fine lines, wrinkles, and creases in the face.

How Does Botox Work?

Tiny muscle contractions make it possible for us to make expressions whether it’s to smile, smirk, frown, etc. However, these repeated muscle contractions result in wrinkles. These wrinkles caused by movement are called dynamic wrinkles.

When Botox is injected to the target site, the neurotoxin works to paralyze the muscles. This means they can no longer contract to form wrinkles which results in the softening of the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

What Can a Botox Treatment Address?

The most common areas where people use Botox injections include:

  • “Cobblestone” skin on the chin

  • Crow’s feet (the wrinkles around the eyes)

  • Horizontal creases on the forehead

  • Grabella creases between the eyes (also called “elevens”)

  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

  • Smoker’s lip line

  • Along the jawline to counteract bone loss and correct a downturned lip

Can Anyone Get Botox?

The answer is yes, most people can get the treatment. While most doctors will not recommend it for young people, Botox treatments are actually ideally started in your late 20’s or early 30’s. This is because when you start at a younger age, there will be fewer fine lines and wrinkles to work with as you get older.

When you get preventive Botox treatments done, you will need less Botox at an older age.

Fair warning though, it’s important to manage expectations. While you can expect to look more youthful for the holidays, don’t expect Botox to drastically change the way you look. The idea behind a Botox treatment is to look the same as you are but in your younger version.

What to Expect From a Botox Treatment?

A Treatment Takes Just Minutes

If you feel you’re too busy to spare time for a Botox treatment, here’s good news - a single treatment can take as little as 10 minutes. If you’ve got some minutes to spare during your lunch break, you can go ahead and book an appointment.

The best thing about it is there’s practically no downtime. You can go back to your normal activities after your treatment.

Some cosmetic treatments can cause bruises or swelling that require a few days to a week to subside. With Botox, mild redness or swelling may happen but they usually subside within a few hours. No need to hide out as you wait to recover from your cosmetic treatment.

After a Botox treatment, it’s normal to experience some loss of movement in the affected muscles. You may not be able to frown but who wants to be a Scrooge, anyway?

Do not be alarmed. This is just a result of the nerve impulses of the muscles being calmed.

It’s Relatively Painless

Botox injections are safe, non-invasive, and yes, relatively painless. It does involve needles so you can expect to feel some sting when it is injected into the target areas. Some people describe it to be similar to a bee sting.

If you are particularly pain sensitive, your specialist may apply a topical anesthesia to help with the needle sting.

You See Visible Results Immediately

If you’re planning to attend a party in the days following your treatment, you can expect the full effect to take place within 24 to 72 hours. Fine lines and wrinkles soften and fade away within three to five days after Botox Injections.

So, if you want to look fabulous for an upcoming event, let Botox help you get ready for the holidays.

Results are Definitely Not Permanent

The results of a single treatment can last anywhere from three to twelve months. While they are definitely not permanent, the results last long enough for you to look awesome over the holidays.

Effects become more lasting as you get several treatments. We recommend getting treatment done not just for the holidays. If you want longer lasting results, we recommend getting Botox injections 2 to 3 times a year.

There’s No Downtime but Do Take These Precautions

As discussed above, this is a non-invasive procedure with no downtime. However, your specialist will advise to take these precautions to ensure the best results:

  • Avoid exercising till the day after the treatment

  • Avoid bending the head forward for at least 2 hours after treatment

  • Avoid lying down within the 6 hours after treatment

  • Avoid any blood thinning medications, including Ibuprofen

Side Effects Can Happen

Slight paralysis in the injected area is to be expected. This means Botox is actually working.

These side effects, though rare, can happen to some people:

  • Mild pain, swelling or bruising around the treatment area

  • Upset stomach

  • Headache

  • Temporary eyelid drooping

  • Numbness

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Paralysis of nearby muscles

A Frozen Face is NOT a Normal Side Effect

You may have been wanting to get a Botox treatment for some time now. However, you may have also heard of those horror stories of people coming out of treatments with a frozen face. Definitely not an encouraging scenario!

It could happen to you - if you don’t do your research, that is. Because it’s your face you are talking about, it’s important to choose your specialist carefully. Look for a provider who is trained, certified, and most importantly experienced to administer Botox treatments.

A good Botox treatment should just make you look well-rested and fresh. It should not look like you obviously had something done on your face.
