If you’ve heard about Kybella for a saggy double chin and would like to find out if it’s the treatment for you, you have come to the right place. Skin & Derm Theory Aesthetics is the best aesthetic spa specializing in rejuvenating non-surgical treatments including Kybella injections.

Say that you have submental fat and you’d probably be met with a blank stare. However, mention that you hate your double chin and many people can relate. In fact, in a 2015 survey done by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), they found that 67% of individuals are bothered by excess fat under the chin or neck.

Rightly so, because double chins can make you look old and worse, are difficult to get rid of. Surgery can be an option, but most people do not like the idea of going under the knife and dealing with any post-operative recovery and downtime.

Now, there’s an easier solution called Kybella. Approved by the FDA in 2015, it offers results with none of the drawbacks of surgery.

Read on to find out what Kybella for a saggy double chin is and what it can do for you.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable made out of synthetic deoxycholic acid. In the body, this substance is a form of salt found in human bile that aids in fat digestion.

Deoxycholic acid has the ability to break down fat by destroying the cell membrane. Because of this ability, Kybella is marketed as a non-invasive alternative to liposuction or surgery.

How Does Kybella Work?

When Kybella is injected into the targeted locations of subcutaneous fat, the deoxycholic acid dissolves fat cells. Once injected beneath the chin area, it not only dissolves but also destroys the fat cells so they can’t store fat anymore. The dissolved fat is naturally cleared into the lymphatic and circulatory systems by the immune system.

The process happens gradually over a span of several weeks. In the same way, the deoxycholic acid in Kybella gets metabolized and broken down. This eventually gets excreted as waste by the body.

Is Kybella for a Double Chin for Everyone?

If you are looking for a non-surgical option to target the fat beneath your chin, Kybella may be the treatment for you. An adult 18 years old or older with moderate to severe fat under the chin makes the ideal candidate for the procedure.

However, there are several exceptions. You may not qualify for a Kybella treatment if:

  • You are considering or have undergone facial surgery
  • You have trouble swallowing
  • You have an infection or medical condition in or around the planned treatment area
  • You are pregnant
  • You are nursing

Is Kybella for a Double Chin Safe?

Kybella has been FDA approved for use in the submental (under the chin) area since 2015. A clinical trial shows that not only is it safe and a well-tolerated alternative to surgical procedures including liposuction, but it delivers high-quality results with 82.4% of participants reporting satisfaction with their improved appearance.

What To Expect

Pre-Treatment Consultation

As a procedure, there is little preparation needed for Kybella. However, it is important to have a pre-treatment consultation with your specialist. This ensures that the procedure is the right one for you and risks are minimized.

Your specialist will ask about your medical history, including any cosmetic procedures that you have had done on your face, neck, or chin. It’s important to disclose if you have any bleeding disorder or have any trouble swallowing. You should inform your specialist if you’re taking blood-thinning medications as well.

While studies are still ongoing on the safety of the use of Kybella on pregnant or nursing women, it’s important to let your specialist know if you’re currently pregnant, are planning to become pregnant in the near future, or are currently nursing.

Before your treatment, your specialist will give you certain guidelines to follow, including the following:

  • Discontinue the use of Aspirin and Motrin, and certain herbal supplements including Ginkgo Biloba, Flax Oil, Garlic, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A and E, and other essential fatty acids 1 week to 3 days prior and after treatment. This minimizes the risk of bleeding or bruising.
  • A day or 2 before and after the treatment, avoid alcohol and caffeine, nicotine, high-sodium and high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, and spicy foods. Again, this may increase the risk of swelling or bruising.
  • Two to three days prior to your appointment, discontinue use of Retin-A. This avoids redness and irritation.
  • Reschedule the procedure if you develop a cold or flu, cold sores, blemish, or rash in the treatment area.

Treatment Proper

Kybella is a non-invasive procedure that requires no incisions. However, if you are planning to attend major events, say a wedding or party, it’s better if you schedule your Kybella treatment well in advance.

To avoid infection, it’s advised to wash your face and neck area thoroughly prior to your appointment. Before the administration of Kybella, the injection sites will be marked by a marker to serve as a guide for your specialist.

You may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area or an ice pack to ease any discomfort or pain you may experience during the procedure.

Depending on your particular needs, between 20 to 50 injections may be used under the chin. Typically multiple treatments are needed to yield desired results. The number of treatments will vary from one person to the next.

Post-Treatment Care

Patients who have undergone Kybella injections usually return to their normal activities after the treatment.

Swelling, bruising, or numbness are expected side effects of the treatment but should subside 4 days to a week after your appointment. Some patients may experience mild swelling up to 2 weeks after.

Your specialist will give you post-treatment care instructions which may include:

  • Putting an ice pack on the treatment area to help with the swelling
  • Taking OTC acetaminophen and pain reliever if needed
  • Sleeping on your back for 3 to 5 days after treatment
  • Avoiding vigorous activities, sun, and heat exposure 3 to 5 days after treatment.
  • Avoiding the use of Aspirin and Motrin, and certain herbal supplements including Ginkgo Biloba, Flax Oil, Garlic, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A and E, and other essential fatty acids 1 week to 3 days after treatment. This minimizes the risk of bleeding or bruising.

Treatment Results

The results of a Kybella treatment appear gradually. The targeted cells are removed from the area 4 to 6 weeks after receiving the treatment. At this point, you may see a noticeable change in your profile appearance.

Most people need 2 to 4 treatments to achieve their desired results.

The good news is that the results of a Kybella treatment are lasting because essentially the fat cells in the under chin area are destroyed. No additional treatments are necessary as there are no more cells that store fat.

Are There Side Effects?

The most common side effects of a Kybella treatment are:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Areas of hardness in the treatment areas

Kybella treatments are minimally invasive procedures, however, they are not without the accompanying risks associated with any type of injection.  You can significantly increase the chances of success and greatly minimize the risks by going to a reputable provider. Choose one who is experienced and, most importantly, certified to administer your Kybella treatment.
