What is Xeomin®?

If the “eleven” that forms between your brows each time you frown seem to have become a regular fixture on your face, perhaps it’s time to get a Xeomin® treatment.

Xeomin® is a neurotoxin injectable that is used to block muscle movement in areas that contribute to lines and wrinkles. It is particularly effective for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows.

Also known as IncobotulinumtoxinA, it is made from the botulinum toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It works by blocking nerve activity in the muscles, causing temporary reduction in muscle activity.

So, it’s like Botox®?

Basically, yes. They are both neurotoxins derived from the botulinum. They are both injectables that work on calming muscle contractions that cause wrinkles and lines.

Similarly, Xeomin® effects are likewise temporary and will wear off over a period of time. Typically, like Botox®, periodic maintenance is needed to maintain the desired results.

Xeomin® vs Botox®, what’s the difference?

The main difference is the formulation. It contains only a single ingredient - the botulinum toxin A. Essentially, it comes in a purer form with no protective proteins clustered around the active ingredient. It is also because it comes in this form that no refrigeration is needed before use. This simplifies distribution and storage of the product, and this may make it more practical and desirable for some specialists.

Because of Xeomin®’s pure form, there’s a lower possibility of the body developing antibodies to the substance. With Botox®, the body can develop resistance to the protective proteins and thus limit its desired effects.

Who makes the best candidate for Xeomin®?

For people who feel that  Botox® is not delivering the same results as wanted, they may have already developed resistance to the proteins surrounding the active ingredient. In such cases, Xeomin® may be a great alternative for them.

In an interesting double blind study comparing Botox® and Xeomin®, there was no difference in the end result for the two formulas.

However, patients observed that there was a less tight feeling in the areas where Xeomin® was injected once the effects started kicking in. Given this result, people who do not want the tight feeling typical of a Botox® injection, might make good candidates for Xeomin®.

Xeomin® is also a little less costly than Botox®. If cost is an issue, this may be an excellent alternative.

What to expect with a Xeomin® treatment?

It’s basically the same as a Botox® treatment. Treatment proper may take 10 to 30 minutes. While generally painless, multiple injections may bring more discomfort. For patients with low pain tolerance, a topical anesthetic may be applied to lessen the pain.

Before undergoing treatment, it is important to discuss with your specialist if you ever had:

  • Other botulinum toxin injections, including Botox® in the last 4 months

  • ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease

  • Asthma or emphysema

  • Issues with swallowing

  • Facial muscle weakness including droopy eyelids, weak forehead or trouble raising eyebrows

  • Seizure disorder

  • Bleeding problems

  • Heart disease

  • Surgery, especially on the face

  • myasthenia gravis

  • Lambert-Eaton syndrome

It is also important to let your specialists know of any side effects that you had after receiving a botulinum toxin in the past.

Compared to Botox® where the full effect of the treatment can be seen within 72 hours after the treatment, Xeomin®  takes longer and requires up to 4 days for results to fully form.

What precautions do I take after treatment?

Patients are advised not to rub or scratch the injected area, or otherwise use treatments that involve applying heat to the skin. This may slow down the binding of Xeomin®.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Xeomin® include:

  • Headache

  • Neck pain

  • Dry eyes

  • Dry mouth

  • Tiredness

  • Swelling of eyelid or bruising

  • Diarrhea

  • Blinking less than usual

  • Bleeding and bruising at the site injection

Watch out for any signs of allergic reactions like itching, swelling or shortness of breath as these can lead to a medical emergency when not addressed immediately.

What is Xeomin® used for?

Similar to Botox®,  Xeomin® is used both therapeutically and for cosmetic uses. Among the medical conditions that it can help are:

  • Uncontrolled blinking or spasm of the eyelids

  • Lazy eye

  • Chronic drooling

  • Migraine

  • Profuse underarm sweating

Cosmetic specialists recommend Xeomin® for horizontal lines across the forehead and perpendicular frown lines between the brows (also called “The Elevens”).

Xeomin® can be used interchangeably with Botox® to improve appearance of lines and wrinkles including:

  • Lines at the corner of the mouth

  • Wrinkles around the eyes

  • “Cobblestone” that appear on the chin

It is important to remember that with both Xeomin® and Botox®, these treatments are not meant to alter how you look. They soften the lines and wrinkles in your face so you look fresher and younger.

How long do the effects of Xeomin® last?

The effects of a Xeomin® treatment do not last long. After a period of time, its effects wear off and nerve impulses become more active in the muscles. This causes contractions and subsequently, wrinkles will begin to appear again. Therefore, to maintain the results over time, periodic maintenance is needed. Typically, one needs to get treatments every three to six months.

Those who get regular treatments may observe decreased muscle activity. Thus, they may find that they do not as much or may not have to have touch ups done as frequently.
