What You Need to Know About Radiesse®️

What is Radiesse®️?

Radiesse ® is an injectable cosmetic filler used for smoothing moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is also effective for correcting volume loss in the back of the hands.

The active ingredient in Radiesse is synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite which comes in a form of microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Once injected, visible results can be seen immediately. Full results, however, appear within a week after treatment.

Radiesse®️ initially works with the injectable gel filling in the volume you desire. However, calcium hydroxylapatite stimulates the production of collagen, the substance that gives skin its strength and elasticity. In effect, Radiesse ®️ works by allowing your skin to produce more of its own filler. The other ingredients in the gel, including hydrogen, oxygen and carbon help to create structure.

Because of the collagen stimulating characteristic of Radiesse ®️, results of treatment can last from a year to up to two years.

It is precisely because it takes the body a long time to metabolize Radiesse®️ that you should carefully consider if you are ready for the treatment. If you don’t like the results, you have to live with it for a while. However, when administered properly and executed well, the treatment can yield stunning results!

Who are ideal candidates for Radiesse®️?

Radiesse®️ is ideal for adults between the ages of 35 and 60 who want to address folds and wrinkles around the mouth and nose. People who want to plump the skin on their hands are

also ideal candidates for this dermal filler.

Take note, however, that although it can be used on the folds around the mouth and noise, the safety and effectiveness of Radiesse ®️ for lip augmentation has not been established. In fact, lip nodules have been reported in patients who were injected with Radiesse to plump up lips.

What to expect with your Radiesse®️ treatment?

Pre-treatment. A reputable provider for Radiesse®️ treatment ensures that risks are minimized. Before a treatment, your specialist should find out what you want done to assess if Radiesse®️ is appropriate for your needs. In addition, any medical conditions or medications you are currently taking should be taken into consideration to ensure that you will have no adverse reactions.

Radiesse®️ is not recommended for:

  • Patients with history of severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis

  • Patients who are hypersensitive to any of the components

  • Patients with bleeding disorders

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

It’s also important to let your specialist know if you have recently suffered injuries or issues with your hands (if you’re going for a hand treatment). If your skin is prone to keloids (raised or large scars), your specialist may suggest an alternate treatment. You should avoid Radiesse®️ if you have recently had skin peels or similar treatments.

These medications may increase the risk for excessive bleeding or bruising at the location of the treatment:

  • Blood thinners

  • Aspirin

  • Warfarin

  • Ibuprofen

During Treatment.  Radiesse®️ treatments are quick and are typically performed in the office.  Your specialist may administer a local or topical anesthesia to lessen any discomfort you may experience due to the injection.  Lidocaine is an FDA-approved anesthetic that may safely be used with Radiesse®️ to ease the pain during the procedure.  It’s best to inform your specialist if you are particularly sensitive to lidocaine to avoid any allergic reactions.

Your specialist will then determine what areas on your face need injections, as well as the dosage needed.  Once the anesthetic has taken effect, the filler is infected into the target area with a small needle.

Depending on the number of injections needed, a treatment session may last from 15 to 40 minutes.

There is little or no down time after a Radiesse®️ treatment. You can generally return to your normal routine immediately. However, you’ll have to avoid exercising or any strenuous activities for at least 24 hours after the treatment. You may experience sun sensitivity so it’s best to avoid direct exposure to sun and heat for at least 24 hours, or until the swelling or redness has subsided.

Swelling, some bruising or discomfort is expected after the treatment. However, swelling should go down within 36 hours. You may take over the counter medication in case of any discomfort.

What are the possible side effects of the treatment?

People who received the treatment on their face report these common side effects:

✓ Swelling

✓ Itching

✓ Pain

✓ Bruising

✓ redness

People who have received treatment on their hands report these side effects:

✓ Itching

✓ Pain

✓ Difficulty with normal movement

✓ Loss of sensation

✓ Swelling

✓ Redness

✓ Itching

✓ Bruising

✓ Lumps or nodules

Most side effects should go away in a week or two. Nodules that form beneath the skin may need to be treated with cortisone, or in some cases with surgery. If side effects persist or get worse, you should go back to your specialist for immediate action.

Are there complications that can arise from a Radiesse®️ treatment?

While this treatment is relatively simple, the person administering the injection should be trained and experienced. This would minimize risk of having Radiesse®️ accidentally injected into a blood vessel instead of into connective tissue. Should this happen, possible complications are:

✓ Temporary scabbing

✓ Scarring which could be permanent

✓ Discoloration to the affected skin

✓ Abnormal vision

✓ Severe pain

✓ Blindness

✓ Stroke

We cannot overemphasize the need to choose your provider carefully. Going to reputable aesthetic spas like Skin Theory Aesthetic  ensures that all measures are taken to ensure your safety.
