All About Juvederm ®️ - What You Need to Know
What is Juvederm®️ ?
One of the most popular anti-aging treatments, Juvederm®️ is a non-surgical solution that can correct facial wrinkles and folds. It is considered as a dermal filler that comes in smooth gel form.
There are many kinds of dermal fillers and they are categorized according to the active ingredient used. Juvederm®️ is made up of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid is particularly effective for use as a dermal filler because of its ability to attract water. This means it can plump up the volume of the skin and its foundations.
Although there are other products that are hyaluronic acid based, many come in granular form. Because Juvederm®️ comes in a smooth gel, it allows for natural and smooth looking skin after the injection. This dermal filler is considered safe for all complexions, even for people who have dark skin.
Because it is made up of a naturally occurring substance in the body, Juvederm®️ does not require prior testing for allergic reactions.
However, Juvederm®️ contains lidocaine, an added ingredient that helps with any pain or discomfort the patient may feel during the treatment. It’s best to inform your specialist prior to your treatment if you have sensitivity to lidocaine.
What are the different products in the Juvederm®️ line?
There are different products in the Juvederm®️ line. Each is designed to target specific problems depending on the area and depth that they are injected.
Juvederm®️ Voluma XC add volume beneath the skin’s surface and is used to plump up the cheeks
Juvederm®️ XC and Juvederm®️ Vollure XC help in filling out wrinkles around the mouth and known (also known as smile or marionette lines) and are used to address the loss of the skin’s elasticity
Juvederm®️ Ultra XC and Juvederm®️ Volbella XC are best used to enhance thin lips.
How does Juvederm®️ work?
Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen is the connective tissue that plumps the skin. As we age, however, the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen decreases. This results in sagging and wrinkling of facial skin.
Juvederm®️ , as mentioned above, has hyaluronic acid as its active ingredient. During a Juvederm®️ treatment, the gel like substance is injected into the dermal layer of the target area. This plumps up sunken areas and smooths out wrinkles. The hyaluronic acid in Juvederm®️ draws in water to the treatment area. This creates the filling effect.
What to expect for a Juvederm®️ treatment?
Pre-treatment. A reputable provider would sit down with you to find out your needs, medical history and lifestyle. This enables your specialist to create a treatment program that is safe and will yield the best results.
It’s important that you disclose any medical condition you have or medications you are currently taking to minimize risks during the treatment.
Tell your specialist if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
Disclose if you have a history of excessive scarring (keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring), or pigmentation disorders
Tell your specialist if you have a history of allergies or allergic reactions
Tell your specialist if you have experienced skin injury near the site of the injection
Tell your specialist if you are on immunosuppressive therapy as this may increase risk of infection
Tell your specialist if you are on medicines that can prolong bleeding including ibuprofen or aspirin, as well as blood thinners. These may increase risk of bleeding or bruising in the injection site.
24 hours prior to your scheduled treatment, it’s better to avoid strenuous activities, alcoholic beverages and exposure to heat or extensive heat.
During treatment. A Juvederm®️ treatment is minimally invasive and can take as short as 15 minutes to complete. It’s typically done in the office and requires little or no downtime. Your specialist may opt to apply a topical anesthetic to treatment areas before starting the treatment. This is to help with any discomfort or pain during and after the treatment. However, Juvederm®️ is already formulated with lidocaine to make the treatment comfortable for the patient.
The gel like substance is gently injected to the treatment area to plump up the skin. To ensure even distribution of the gel under your skin, your specialist will massage the injected area.
The remarkable thing about Juvederm®️ is the immediate results it yields. No need to wait to see the difference. It’s instant gratification!
After the treatment. Although there is little or no downtime, your specialist will advise you to avoid exposure to the sun or heat, strenuous exercise, as well as alcoholic beverages up to 24 hours after the treatment.
It’s possible to experience some bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site. These should typically clear up within seven days. If there is pain or swelling, an ice pack gently applied to the treatment area can help.
Is Juvederm®️ safe?
Juvederm ® has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. Given the stringent standards of the FDA, Juvederm®️ would not have been approved if it was not safe.
Furthermore, it is one of the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures done in the U.S. In 2016 alone, 2.4 million procedures using hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, including Juvederm®️ were performed.
Are there risks involved?
It’s important to choose carefully and wisely. Consult with a reputable and experienced provider for your Juvederm®️ treatment. Complications may arise if the person administering the treatment is untrained, inexperienced or worst, unlicensed. Here are the possible risks and complications:
Unintentional injection into a blood vessel
How long do effects last for a Juvederm®️ treatment?
The effects of a Juvederm ® treatment are immediate and can typically last from 6 months to as long as 2 years depending on what Juvederm®️ product was used.
